Acupuncture for Knee Pain
The knee rarely causes its own problems ā
it usually inherits them from the hip or ankle.
Knee pain can come from a number of sources ā ligament strain, meniscus irritation, or patellofemoral tracking issues that cause pain around or behind the kneecap, especially with stairs, squatting, or prolonged sitting. The pain pattern alone doesn't always tell you which structure is involved, which is why a thorough assessment matters.
Why It Happens
The knee is a hinge joint with very little rotational give of its own, which means it absorbs a lot of the mechanical fallout from the hip and ankle above and below it. Weakness or restriction at either end ā hip stability, ankle mobility ā often shows up as pain at the knee, even when the knee itself isn't structurally the problem.
How We Treat It
We use acupuncture and dry needling around the knee and surrounding musculature to reduce pain and swelling, then treat the full kinetic chain
(the hip, the ankle, and the fascial planes running the length of the leg)
to address the mechanics actually driving the load through the knee.
What to Expect
Mild strains and irritation often respond within 4ā6 visits. More chronic tracking or overuse issues typically need 6ā10 weeks of weekly care paired with a strengthening program addressing hip and ankle stability.
