Acupuncture for Glute Medius Strain & Tendinopathy
Deep outer hip pain with walking or stairs is one of the most commonly missed overuse injuries we see.
Glute medius strain and tendinopathy cause an aching or sharp pain deep in the outer hip, often worse with walking, climbing stairs, standing on one leg, or lying on the affected side at night. It's frequently mistaken for hip bursitis or referred lower back pain.
Why It Happens
The glute medius stabilizes the pelvis with every step you take. Weakness or fatigue in this muscle group ā often from prolonged sitting, altered gait patterns, or training imbalances ā shifts excess load onto the tendon where it attaches to the hip, leading to irritation over time.
How We Treat It
We use acupuncture and dry needling at the glute medius and surrounding hip stabilizers to reduce pain and improve activation of an often underused muscle group, then treat the full kinetic chain ā low back, knee, and ankle mechanics, plus the fascial planes connecting them ā to correct the gait and postural patterns contributing to the overload.
What to Expect
Glute medius issues typically respond well to consistent care ā most patients see meaningful improvement within 6ā8 weeks of weekly visits, often paired with a targeted strengthening program.
