Acupuncture for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Wrist pain, numbness, and tingling often involve more than just the carpal tunnel — we treat the nerve pathway and what's compressing it.

Carpal tunnel syndrome causes pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hand and wrist — typically along the thumb, index, and middle fingers — and often worsens at night or with sustained gripping, typing, or repetitive wrist motion.

It's one of the most common nerve compression conditions, and one of the most undertreated with conservative care before jumping to surgery.

Why It Happens

The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway in the wrist through which the median nerve travels into the hand. When the tendons or tissues within that tunnel become inflamed or thickened — from repetitive motion, prolonged flexion, fluid retention, or postural strain — the nerve gets compressed, producing the characteristic numbness and tingling.

What's often missed is that the median nerve can be irritated at multiple points along its path, not just at the wrist — compression through the forearm, elbow, or even the neck can produce identical symptoms, and treating the wrist alone won't resolve it if the upstream tension is driving the problem.

How We Treat It

We use acupuncture and dry needling at the wrist and along the full length of the median nerve pathway — forearm, elbow, and neck — to reduce local inflammation, decompress the nerve, and restore healthy nerve signaling.

Treating the full kinetic chain, including the shoulder, thoracic spine, and the fascial planes running from the neck to the fingertips, is essential since carpal tunnel symptoms frequently have a double-crush component: compression at more than one point along the nerve's path.

Alongside the structural work, we assess for underlying imbalances — in circulation, inflammation, nervous system regulation, and recovery capacity — that may be slowing the healing response or making the tissue more vulnerable to injury in the first place.

What to Expect

Mild to moderate carpal tunnel syndrome often responds well to acupuncture, with many patients noticing reduced numbness and improved grip within 6–8 visits. More established cases — particularly those with significant nerve conduction changes or prolonged duration — take longer and may need 10–12 weeks of weekly care.

Acupuncture is an effective conservative option before considering surgery, and a useful adjunct for improving nerve healing and reducing scar sensitivity after a carpal tunnel release.
