Acupuncture for TMJ
(Jaw Tension & Clenching)
Jaw pain and clicking often trace back to stress and clenching patterns, not just the joint itself.
TMJ dysfunction shows up as jaw pain, clicking or popping with chewing, morning jaw soreness, or tension that radiates into the temples and ears. It's often worse after stressful periods, since clenching and grinding tend to ramp up exactly when stress does.
Why It Happens
The temporomandibular joint is uniquely sensitive to stress because of how directly the jaw muscles respond to nervous system tension ā clenching during the day and grinding at night load the joint and surrounding muscles far beyond what normal chewing requires. Misalignment, prior dental work, or neck and postural tension can also contribute, since the jaw doesn't operate in isolation from the neck and head.
How We Treat It
We use acupuncture and dry needling directly at the jaw muscles ā masseter, temporalis, and the joint itself ā to release clenching patterns and reduce pain, then treat the full kinetic chain ā the neck, upper back, and the fascial planes connecting jaw to shoulder ā because jaw tension and neck tension almost always travel together. We also address the nervous system component directly, since calming the stress response is often what keeps clenching patterns from returning.
What to Expect
Many patients notice reduced clenching and jaw tension within 4ā6 visits. Because stress is often the underlying driver, ongoing care during high-stress periods ā paired with attention to the nervous system, not just the jaw ā tends to produce the most lasting results.
