# Acupuncture for Ankle Sprains

A sprain that "healed" can still leave the ankle unstable —

we treat the lingering pattern, not just the original injury.

Ankle sprains happen when the ligaments supporting the joint are stretched or torn, usually from rolling or twisting the foot inward. Pain and swelling often resolve within a few weeks, but many people are left with lingering stiffness, instability, or a tendency to re-sprain the same ankle.

## Why It Happens

Once a ligament is injured, the surrounding muscles and nerves change how they fire to protect the joint — a process called proprioceptive deficit. If that protective pattern isn't retrained, the ankle stays vulnerable to re-injury even after the ligament itself has healed.

## How We Treat It

We use acupuncture and dry needling around the injured ligaments and surrounding musculature to reduce swelling and pain, then treat the full kinetic chain — the knee, hip, and the fascial planes running up the outside of the leg — to restore the proprioception and stability the ankle lost during injury and the compensation patterns that followed.

## What to Expect

Acute sprains often respond quickly, frequently within 3–5 visits for pain and swelling. Lingering instability or a chronic "weak ankle" pattern benefits from a longer course — typically weekly visits for 6–8 weeks alongside a stability-focused home program.
